The Power of Art: Why Teens Benefit from a Regular Creative Practice

Regular creative practice in art does wonders to teenage minds. It builds not only their artistic abilities but develops confidence, emotional expression, and is good for mental health as well. During the trials of physical changes, creative teens find a healthy outlet for self-discovery and developing themselves.

Well-being and Self-Expression through Emotions

Art is a powerful means of expression for teenagers. Teenagers are always under social pressures and school pressures, and they have increasing responsibilities, causing a lack of expression regarding thoughts and feelings. They can process these feelings in positive, healthy ways with the help of creative outlets. Multi-media art classes are a safe space for students to connect to themselves and others without judgment to help explore ideas, concepts, and a space to process the world around them.

Building Confidence and Independence

In an art class, teens are encouraged to make choices, experiment with different materials, and take artistic risks. Doing so instills self-confidence and trust in their intuitive feelings in the process. Working on projects in which no two pieces of art are alike teaches students to value and recognize their thoughts and interpretations as important and unique. Self-esteem and problem-solving skills are strengthened when students feel autonomous over their work. Emotional resilience develops throughout the art making process, when students accept 'mistakes', or work that didn't turn out the 'way they were hoping'.

Enhancing Focus and Patience

It is a great exercise in patience and concentration to create art. Through shading a drawing, blending colors on a canvas, or adding detail to clay, teens learn the value of perseverance. These experiences can enhance their focus and ability to stay engaged in other areas of life.

Social Connection and Community

Art classes give teenagers a sense of togetherness and belonging. Interaction with peers in ideation and feedback helps in the formation of social skills and lifelong friendships. When collaboration occurs, the nurturing environment fosters the growth of two important life skills—teamwork and communication.

Chony's Art Room: A Unique Creative Space for Teens

At Chony's Art Room, teenagers explore working with a variety of art mediums, techniques, philosophies and approaches. Before students begin a new art work, Chony demonstrates how to use the focus material and then encourages students to express their understanding in a way that is unique to them and their artistic style/interest.

This is how Chony's Art Room inspires creativity, allowing teenagers the space to explore their individual creativity within a nurturing space.

Promoting a regular art practice for your teens may open possibilities for self-discovery, improved wellbeing, and positive social interactions.
